'Mediation' in Hôtel-Dieu

Unique ‘Mediation’ in the courtyard of Hôtel-Dieu in Paris

Studio Boloz has designed an outdoor exhibition signage that showcases the continuous transformation of Hôtel-Dieu in Paris, a process that has been an integral part of the history of this place for over a century. The project has been commissioned by the creative agency Manifesto and created in collaboration with the Parisian set designer Cyril Delhomme and the graphic design studio Maison Solide.

Hôtel-Dieu, the first and the oldest hospital located in the heart of Paris, on Île de la Cité, one of the two natural islands on the Seine, and in the immediate vicinity of the famous Notre-Dame Cathedral, is today a significant place for the residents of the French capital. For centuries, this architectural landmark has withstood not only the changing cityscape but also its dynamically shifting role in healthcare. Over time, Hôtel-Dieu has also adapted to the needs of a changing society and scientific advancements. Today, while maintaining its medical functions, the hospital is also a vital hub for medical research and a home for innovative start-ups.

An invitation to Mediation

The history and location of the place served as the inspiration for the Exhibition – Mediation, a kind of invitation to engage with the space, history, and function of Hôtel-Dieu. In line with Cyril Delhomme’s vision, Studio Boloz crafted modern, colourful, modular outdoor exhibition signage that contrast with the building’s monumental architecture, drawing the attention of passers-by.

The geometric, contrasting modules, which can be interpreted as seating elements, contemplation points, or high tables, aim to highlight the uniqueness of the place, stimulate the curiosity of visitors, and invite them to spontaneous interaction. Each element incorporates information boards detailing the rich history of this exceptional place.
